Summer Sorority Recruitment Prep: A Month-by-Month Guide
If you want to actually get ahead before recruitment, the summer work that matters most is your application, your social media cleanup, your open house video, and your summer contact with current members. Your outfits matter the least of everything on that list, which is the exact opposite of what most PNMs spend their summer on.
I know that’s not what you wanted to hear if you’ve got fourteen Pinterest boards going and zero progress on your resume. But I’ve been in the basement of 40+ recruitments, the back room where chapters actually score and debrief PNMs after every round, and I’m telling you what most recruitment advice won’t: the girls who walk in calm in August are the ones who did the boring, tangible work in June. TL;DR: Your Summer Prep, Fast
- May: Start your recruitment application and resume now. This is the single highest-leverage thing you can do all summer.
- June: Audit and clean up your social media. Assume the basement is looking.
- July: Film your open house video, then shop your closet for outfits before buying anything.
- August: Stay responsive to summer contact, finalize materials, and lock in your outfits.
The throughline: chapters score the data you give them long before you set foot in a house. Give them good data early.
Why Your Outfit Is the Least Important Thing You’ll Prep
Let me say the quiet part out loud, because someone should. Your outfit gets looked at for about one or two seconds inside a house. Unless it’s genuinely a disaster, it is not making or breaking you. And here’s the part that stings: even a perfect outfit isn’t groundbreaking. A great outfit doesn’t give you a real leg up. It just means you didn’t give anyone a reason to pause.
Your application is a completely different story. A strong application puts you in rush crush territory before August even starts. (“Rush crush” is basement shorthand for a PNM the chapter is already excited about before round one, the girl they’re hoping walks through the door.) That status comes from your materials, your conversations, and your reputation, not your shoes.
So when you’re deciding where your summer hours go, weight it like the chapters do. The outfit is a one-second judgment. The application is scored thoroughly, in the back room, line by line. We catch it every time when someone phoned it in.
May: Start Your Application and Resume
This is the thing girls leave too late, and it’s the thing I most wish they’d start in May. Not because it’s hard, but because doing it well takes time, and time is the one thing you have right now that you won’t have in August.
Your recruitment application and resume are doing real work behind the scenes. A thorough, well-built application means you get matched better, and better matches mean better conversations during the actual rounds. The girls who have great conversations in the house usually aren’t just naturally gifted talkers. They were set up to succeed by materials that put them in the right rooms with the right chapters.
What “good” looks like here:
- Every important detail included. Leadership, service, work, academics, involvement. Don’t make a chapter guess at who you are.
- Thorough, not padded. Specifics beat fluff every single time.
- Polished. Typos and sloppy formatting read as “didn’t care,” and that reads loud.

June: Clean Up Your Social Media
Assume the basement is looking. Because we are.
Social media review is real, it’s thorough, and it happens before you ever walk in. This isn’t about scrubbing your personality off the internet. It’s about making sure nothing on your public profiles becomes a standards concern, which is the term chapters use for anything that could reflect poorly on the organization.
Done right, a June social audit means:
- Going through every public profile the way a stranger would.
- Cleaning up anything that doesn’t reflect how you want to be read.
- Making sure your accounts are working for you, not raising flags.

July: Film Your Open House Video and Shop Your Closet
Open house videos are tough, and most PNMs make the same mistake: they wing it. Don’t.
Most open house videos are capped at one or two minutes, and there’s a reason for that cap. Picture a basement team watching two thousand one-minute videos. That’s a staggering number of minutes, which means yours has to land or else you will be forgotten. Prep it like a one-minute speech, because that’s effectively what it is.
Here’s how to make a good one:
- Write it first. Full responses or at least solid bullet points. Don’t improvise on camera.
- Practice before you film. A few run-throughs so you sound like yourself, not a hostage reading a ransom note.
- Dress for camera. A solid color in a shade you look good in films best. Patterns get busy, white can wash you out. Pick something you feel confident in, because confidence reads on video the same way it reads in a house.
- Watch your background. It should be clean and simple, with the focus on you.
And one piece of insider tea most people won’t tell you: basement teams will screenshot your background. I have personally taken a screenshot of a bookshelf behind a PNM to zoom in on the titles, checking for anything that might register as a standards concern. So if there’s a bookshelf, a wall, anything we can see behind you, look at it the way a stranger zooming in would. Then move it or clear it.
July is also when you start your outfits, and notice I said start, not stress. Before you add a single thing to a cart, shop your own closet first. Pull everything you might wear for each round and lay it out. You’ll almost always find you own more of what you need than you think, and seeing the gaps in front of you is the only honest way to know what’s actually worth buying. This is the low-stakes outfit work: sorting, trying things on, figuring out what you have. It belongs in July precisely because it takes the panic out of August, when there’s no time left to order anything and have it arrive.
August: Summer Contact, Final Touches, and Locking In Outfits
By August the heavy lifting should be done. This month is about staying responsive and tightening the screws.
Summer contact done right means you actually engage. If active members DM you, respond. Don’t leave them on read. The PNMs who ignore member outreach over the summer tend to land lower on lists, and they usually never find out that’s why. You don’t have to perform or overshare. You just can’t go quiet. Being responsive and warm over the summer is one of the simplest ways to stay top of mind.
This is also when you do the final pass on everything: application proofed, materials submitted, video sent, socials clean. And your outfits get finalized here, not started. Because you shopped your closet in July, August is just locking it in: every round’s outfit decided, tried on, steamed, and hanging ready so you’re not making decisions at midnight before round one. That’s the whole point of doing the outfit thinking early. By the time it matters, it’s done. Prep isn’t overthinking. Prep is how you walk in calm.
